When considering packing for Japan one thing to keep in mind is "just the essentials"

If you are visiting as a tourist for a couple of weeks, then a "carry on" bag can be sufficient

If you are packing for "Motorcycle Touring in Japan" there are many considerations you have to make particularly the season you will ride in and what type of riding you wish to do - city based, country or off-road. Each season and style of riding will require careful planning, acquiring and assessing, packing and lists of items to buy on arrival.

 For Example:

If you are riding in a Japanese summer (June, July and August) in city riding. You might want to consider lightweight breathable shoes as the high humidity will see the sweat running down your legs and into your shoes. Please consider safety, these may not be suitable for all riders.

Tip: A mix of safety and lightweight can be found at many hardware stores in Japan, such as Shimachu - a chain of hardware stores. They sell sneakers like the above that have steel caps and are still lightweight and very reasonable at under Y 5000 yen. They look like typical sneakers but pack a secret weapon for your feet, particularly when continuously changing gears.

So season plays a big part in the gear you need and what will help you ride comfortably. If you are hiring a motorcycle, check with the hire company for gear you can rent, this can save you in many ways,
For example:

1.Impacts what you bring in your luggage from home,
2. Saves time when you land by not having to look for things and
3. Saves you money as you can get straight on the motorcycle and ride, less rental days, less accommodation = more money for fun!
